Betting on Sports with Money Lines
In the world of sports bets, the money line bet is one of the less complex types of bets. When making a money line bet, you are putting your money on the team or participant that will win the sporting event. This type of bet, unlike others, doesn't not follow money lines which contribute to its simplicity. Before the sport event commences, a particular team or opponent is predicted to win the sports competition. This team or person is referred to as the favorite. Of course, in selecting a favourite, there remains the other side that is basically predicted to lose, known as the underdog.
When making money line bets the amount of your wager will vary depending upon the side on which you place your bet. If you chose to wager on the favourite, you would bet more money than if you have placed your money on the underdog to be victorious. The reason the amounts of these bets varies, most people would place their money on the favourite if the bets were for the same amount.
The amount of your potential winnings also varies depending upon which side you chose to place your wager. For instance, had you placed your money on the favourite, you return winnings would be much smaller than the winnings if you had placed your money on the underdog.
To illustrate how a money line bet works, let's use an example from the US National Football League. Prior to an upcoming game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns, the Steelers were projected as the favourite. The money line for wagering on the Steelers was set at -180. This means that in order to win £1000, the better must wager £180. If the money line for the Browns was set at +150, this means that a £100 wager will return winnings of £150.
