Cellulite Causes And Treatments

Cellulite, usually occurring in women some time after puberty, is a very common condition. It involves dimpling of the layers of skin of the legs and stomach, although other areas may be affected. This condition is harmless, but is associated with a loss of elasticity in the skin and the depletion of collagen, a protein found in cell membranes.

Although it is extremely common, it can cause issues with appearance and self esteem for those affected by it. It may exacerbate body image problems and be a considerable obstacle in the enjoyment of activities like swimming. Common names for cellulite include "cottage cheese", "orange peel skin" and "hail damage".

How Do I Get It?

Researchers are currently exploring the link between cellulite and estrogen levels in the body. Cellulite occurs mostly in women and in men with androgen deficiencies, and there is evidence of more men manifesting symptoms who are undergoing estrogen therapy for prostate conditions.

Although the link between fat cells and hormonal regulation is being targeted for study, the exact causes of cellulite remain mysterious. Stress, poor diet, and genetics all play a role in whether an individual person has cellulite. Although obesity may worsen the appearance of dimpling, even those who are in shape and feature well defined musculature can have some cellulite. The usual culprits of smoking, alcohol, sugary foods, and carbohydrates are also linked to increased incidence.

Treatments for Cellulite

There are many treatments available for cellulite, although presently no 100% cures. Everything from collagen-containing lotions, to acupuncture, to herbal supplements, to massage may be used. Liposuction is not generally recommended as its effectiveness is rather low. Instead, there is an emphasis on improving skin health through things associated with circulation, a diet high in essential vitamins, and keeping skin hydrated. This can be as simple as taking in eight cups of water a day.

While there are many creams and other topical treatments available for cellulite, it may be the simple action of massaging tissue that stimulates proper blood flow and thus improves the health of the cells in the layers of skin affected by cellulite. There is some evidence that a topical treatment made with caffeine may improve skin appearance by dilating blood vessels in affected areas and increasing oxygen flow and the elimination of waste from cells. Healthy tissue is the key here. The injectable drug mixture in lipo dissolve, lasers, and surgery are also options explored by individuals who have not had success with other methods. The cost of a permanent solution can be thus quite costly.
