Danger! Breast Implant Warning!

If you're considering breast augmentation that's great, but let me take the time to ask that you take the time to do your homework and find out all you can about the procedure first. Even more important is that you research the cosmetic surgeons you're considering and find out everything you can about them too. Breast implants can be a great improvement, but it's up to you to get all the information about possible complications and side effects before undergoing the surgery.

There are two types of breast implants used; those made with silicone and those made from saline. They both have an outer shell of silicone, the difference is in the filling. Saline implants are filled with salt water and silicone implants are filled with silicone gel. Both can be used effectively for breast augmentation and each has it's pros and cons. Currently there are only a few companies that are authorized by the FDA to make breast implants.

You might be surprised to learn that breast implants have been around for over 40 years. Silicone was the first material used for breast implants, however since the use of saline breast augmentation procedures have really gained in popularity, with over 300,000 breast enhancement surgeries done last year in the U.S. alone. Silicone implants were viewed very skeptically initially because of problems associated with the breast implants rupturing. The silicone implants were actually banned in 1993, but were subsequently re-instated when research found no connection between ruptured silicone implants and any disease.

Ruptured implants can have several effects. If it's a saline breast implant the breast loses it's shape. As you can imagine this is very easy to notice. The saline implants will be harmless when rupturing since they will just leave saltwater in your body. If a silicone implant breaks the only way to know is through an MRI. So far there have been no connections shown between ruptured silicone implants and breast augmentation complications.

Saline implants are much easier for the cosmetic surgeon to implant. Unlike the silicone implants which are inserted fully inflated, the saline implants are inserted with no saline in them and the saline is added later. This means they can also be increased or decreased in size at a later date without the need for surgery.

Silicone implants are preferred by some women though because they have a more "real" look and feel than the saline breast implants. They feel that the possible dangers of silicone implants are offset by the better look.

The decision on what type of implants to get can be a hard one, but ultimately it is yours. Do your homework and get all the information prior to making a decision you'll have to live with for the rest of your life. Both types of breast implants are good, you just need to know which one is best for your breast augmentation.
