Laser Eyelid Surgery - Blepharoplasty
Many people complain that the "bags" under the eyes or the loose and redundant skin of the upper eyelids give them a tired appearance. The "bags" cause the appearance of dark circles under the eyes making one look tired even after a good nights sleep. This problem can even affect young people, as this problem often runs in families.
There are essentially two major problems that affect the eyelids. One is the build up of excess fat behind the eyelids, especially in the lower eyelids. This pushes outward on the eyelid causing a bulge or "bag" to develop. Light, which most often comes from above us, will shine on the bulge and cause a shadow to form under the lid. This gives the appearance of dark circles and the tired-look.
The second major problem affecting eyelids is wrinkling of the skin. This is due to a loss of the skins natural elastic properties, which can be as a result of the aging process, sun damage and cigarette smoking. The excess skin can become redundant and hang down, especially on the upper lids, adding to that tired or aged appearance. Excessive drooping of the upper eyelids can even obstruct vision.
Surgical treatment, called a Blepharoplasty, is directed at each of these problems. This ultra skilled approach represents a blend of the highest level of safety with the best aesthetic results.
Candidates for laser Blepharoplasty include those who have:
A tired appearance of the eyes. "Bags" or bulging of the lower eyelids. Redundant skin, muscle and fat of the upper eyelids. Obstruction of vision from drooping upper eyelids. Wrinkling of the eyelid skin.
In the lower eyelids, the vast majority of patients have too much fat build up behind the lid. Some plastic surgeons use the CO2 laser to go behind the eyelid to remove the excess fat. The beauty of the laser is that as it cuts thru tissue it immediately seals or "welds" the blood vessels shut. This method decreases the risk of bleeding, which is especially important around the eyes.
There is generally less bruising and swelling associated with this technique, thus allowing for faster recovery than traditional techniques. Sun damaged and wrinkled skin of the lower lids are treated by a laser resurfacing technique designed to eliminate the damaged outer layer of skin and promote the production of new, healthier collagen. This really helps to tighten the skin. This method also avoids any visible incision on the outside of the lower eyelid, and minimizes the risk of the lid being pulled downward.
Some plastic surgeon use the CO2 laser on the upper lids to remove any excess tissue and protruding fat. The incision is placed in the natural crease in order to provide maximal healing and camouflage. As excess skin, muscle and fat are removed with the laser, the blood vessels are again welded shut.
Following a laser Blepharoplasty, patients are instructed to place ice on their eyes for 24 hours (15 minutes on the area, followed by 15 minutes with ice off of the skin). Patients should avoid all exercise, heavy lifting and bending-over for two weeks after the procedure. Additionally, those patients who undergo laser resurfacing will be instructed in how to compress with water and/or ointments to aid in the healing process.
Laser eyelid surgery is a wonderful way to restore the youthful appearance of your eyes and rid yourself of that tired appearance.
