The Art of The Sunless Suntan: An Introduction

Sunless tanning has evolved remarkably during the last decade. While we're still using the same primary ingredient we've used for decades (dihydroxyacetone), both the accompanying ingredients and the application process have improved to the point that it has become completely unnecessary to subject yourself to the risk of melanoma through traditional suntanning.

When you begin investigating sunless spray tans, individuals will find a competitive niche of resources vying for your attention. Should people use a towelette or a cream? Should you consider having your sunless tan applied at a pro tanning studio or might you achieve your hoped for appearance in an easy and inexpensive manner at home?

There are approaches for most levels of budgets. Believe it or not, since sunless tanning products have evolved in the last decade, just a couple of dollars at your local super market will get you the quality of sunless tan that cost a hundred dollars just twenty years ago.

These easy-to-use products, which often come in the form of a simple cream or bottle which sprays just like hair spray or spray deodorant, all use the identical main ingredient as the sunless tans you'll receive at a pro sunless tanning studio. That substance is dihydroxyacetone (you will also find it labeled as DHA). It is a well-vetted and safe component which both the cosmetic and the nutritional communities have used for several decades.

However, one possible problem with these products is that you might find it challenging to evenly apply the intensity of the product to achieve a natural-looking, even tan. This is fine if you're just doing a quickie on your face or arms, but if you want to prepare for wearing more revealing clothes or a swimsuit, you need to apply appropriately to all normally exposed parts of your body... even those difficult to reach or difficult to see spots like your back, and also the back of your legs, arms and neck.

Not only do you need to reach all these areas, but you need to change the proportion depending on the type of surface to which you're applying the product. You want to apply less to areas like your elbows than you want on an open, smooth part of your body, like your back.

This is where airbrush tanning systems come in handy. You can quickly & easily swish the airbrush across areas such as elbows while more deliberately spraying on open, smooth skin. Also, the even, constant spray better simulates the sun because surfaces which tend to catch more sun will obtain more of the spray.

You might think, can I not do this with a bottle spray from the local supermarket? Well, not really. First of all, you must keep pumping the spray. Not only does this grow tedious quickly but it makes it very difficult to keep the spray constant and even.

Furthermore, good spray tan systems provide a means to position yourself while the airbrush operates. This means you do not have to contort yourself to apply the spray or cream to all those hard-to-see parts of your body.

Does this mean you must pay for a professional sunless tanning studio to get it right? No, not necessarily. Sunless tanning techniques have become popular enough that it is now possible to obtain relatively cheap, quality sunless tanning systems for use at home.

So if you've wondered about sunless tanning before, now is the time for you to give it a shot. It's inexpensive, simple and effective. With just a little study and a little practice, you'll fool even your most attentive friends with your new rosy glow.
