Factors Affecting the Cost of Lasik Surgery

If you visit your doctor and ask about treatments for myopia, chances are he or she will suggest lasik eye surgery. And why not? Lasik is the most common procedure performed on the human eye in the United States and Canada, and the medical community continues to make advancements with both equipment used to perform the surgery and the procedure itself. Innovations are being made very day in this field.

Given the advancements over the years, it should be of no surprise that the cost of lasik eye surgery has gone down considerably over the years. When we think of the factors that contribute to the cost of a medical procedure we think mainly about equipment and availability of experienced surgeons. The less the cost of the equipment, the less each patient must pay to allow the operator to recoup those costs. And, the higher the number of lasik eye surgeons, the less of a monopoly they have on the market and the more competition. Competition drives down prices, which is good for the consumer. So looking at those two factors, since the equipment has gone down in price and the supply of qualified operators has gone up, it follow that the price of the procedure itself will go down.

One interesting aspect of lasik eye surgery cost is that the experience level of the doctor performing the surgery plays a relatively large part in how much they can charge for their time. If we look at lasik eye surgery results versus the number of procedures that the operator has performed, we see a gradual decrease in errors and increase in accuracy as the doctor performs more procedures. It slowly levels out at around the 300 mark, and that means our best bang for the buck is to find a doctor that has performed at least 300 operations.

Another aspect of cost to keep in mind when looking for a lasik eye surgery provider is that cost of living in the area that the provider's office is located is a player as well. Lasik eye surgery is more expensive in areas where the cost of living is more. To translate, a doctor in an expensive part of town will charge more than on in an area of average or moderate means. Is the more expensive doctor better? Probably not, so make sure you know his or her experience level and you know what you're getting for your hard-earned dollar.
