The History Of Antidepressants

While we talk about depression we talk about mind and the function of the mind. New special branch came in to existence in the Europe at the middle of 19th century named psychology. It was treated as the sub-branch of philosophy before the middle 19th century.

After that almost whole world including medical discipline concentrate on the human mind and start to research. At the same time science and technology was on the high-way. Factories and other things were fostering and numbers of people were migrating here and there in the world in searched of jobs and other reasons.

However science and technological development create another side effect on the human mind that is depression. People started to run behind the money or dollar and want to live luxurious life. But they trap in another net that is depression.

Medical discipline grabbed this chance overcome on the human depression. There are number of reason like biological, chemical, psychological changes in the brain as well as in the body. It is said that almost 20% people depressed for life time every year. 80% patients follow the suicide option to get read of the tension or depression.

It is important to analyze and categorized the behavior, function, mood, of the person. It is because the medicines or drugs are being made according to the symptoms. For example serotonin, noradrenaline, DA, NA, 5HT, dopamine etc drugs are classified and used according to the treating ability of the drugs. 5-HT1A, 5-HT1B and 5-HT2C sub-types, these drugs are used according to the behavioral symptoms. Iproniazid, is called the first modern antidepressant.

Around 1960, originally it was developed as an Antitubercular. It was widely used as an antidepressant drug across the world. With the help of this drug more than 400000 patients were treated. Gradually researches searching fostering towards the goal and find out that blocks activities of monoamine oxidase, the enzyme.

They spoil the monoamine neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. However iproniazid created some toxic side effects and so did not used for long time as an antidepressant. An Imipramine was useful as the antidepressant for the patients who surfed from schizophrenia.

Before 20 years Librium, Valium, and tricyclic etc antidepressants were used. In the 1980s it is said that antidepressants are not useful medicine but dangerous drugs. In 1987 first SSRI, Fluoxetine (Prozac) was released and used as special antidepressant. This drug and other drugs inhibit the reuptake of serotonin. These drugs increase serotonin function in the brain.
