What's New In Children's And Adult Orthodontics That Is Making Treatments So Popular

The world of adult orthodontics and children's orthodontics are no longer seen the same way. While these are still not fashionable treatments, they are becoming more a form of expression or deception, depending on the patient's preferences. Kids with metal mouths are no longer too embarrassed to smile and this is a huge benefit considering the length of some of these treatments. Headgear is still not a pleasant experience, but technological advancements have certainly made treatments more pleasant for patients of all ages.

The Revolution Of Adult Orthodontics

The biggest change in adult orthodontics is the number of people now using braces to improve the quality of their smile. The American Dental Association states that around 1.1 million adults are wearing braces in the country. This number has doubled since 1998. This is partially because those who could not have the treatment as children can now afford it. Yet another reason behind this immense growth is that new systems have been developed allowing patients to be treated without advertising it to the world.

While some patients choose traditional treatments, the latest trends in adult orthodontics are all about keeping treatment a secret from others. Clear brackets and styles that feature built in elastics make these appliances a lot less noticeable and more elegant looking than older versions. New methods, such as iBraces, sit on the inside of your teeth rather than on the fronts so that they are almost impossible to see when you smile. Other technologies, such as Invisalign, eliminate the metal all together and use a system of custom fit trays to move teeth into place.

New Trends In Children's Orthodontics

When a child needed braces twenty years ago, orthodontists had to use a standard appliance system. This involved the installation of stainless steel wires and brackets with basic elastics. These looked awkward and uncomfortable to the point they earned the nickname 'railroad track' braces. Today, these are becoming far more favorable. In fact, many movies and television shows now feature some of these appliances. Children's orthodontics is now a chance for kids to have a say in their treatment and make a personal and unique statement.

The elastics for braces are now available in almost any color you can think of. This means kids can select their own colors. Their teeth now sport their favorite colors or color schemes that match a favorite sports team, school colors, or a seasonal color palette. With the arrival of composites, these treatments can have particular themes and shapes. Some of the most popular include shapes such as flowers, stars, and sports themes. This means kids no longer have a reason to hide their braces.

For patients needing adult orthodontics and children's orthodontics, Huntington specialists and those throughout the country have a variety of options to choose from. Kids often make their braces bold and attention grabbing. For older patients, they can straighten their teeth and enjoy seeing what happens when someone notices the difference.
