Why Is Addiction So Hard To Stop?
It is not fair to judge addicted persons. They may also want to stop their addiction but they simply can’t. What’s holding them back then? To answer this question, you must know about addiction first. Addiction refers to the uncontrollable urge of a person for something. In most cases, addiction is used in reference to drugs and alcohol.
Addiction Uncovered
Addiction is actually a brain disorder. It is chronic but can be treated. People who are addicted to drugs or alcohol or even gambling are those who can’t control their needs. They continue to give in to their urges even if they know that their health and life are at risk. The cause of this brain disorder is actually those substances that these people are addicted to. For instance, drugs and alcohol can cause serious brain disorders that eventually lead to addiction.
The brain isn’t able to function properly. It sends signals that aren’t supposed to be. Because the brain has been modified by the addictive substance, it now associates absence of that substance to other major body needs like food. So when the person isn’t able to take that substance, drug or alcohol perhaps, he isn’t contented. His body keeps on craving until it is fully satisfied.
Over time, addiction gets worse. If a person isn’t treated immediately, he will develop serious addiction. And it will be very hard to overcome already. The person is also more prone to serious health conditions.
Battling Addiction
Battling addiction is easier said than done. It is easy to tell an addicted person to stop now or else he will suffer serious health problems. But even if he knows the health risks already, he may still not be able to fight his addiction. Addiction has a grip over him already. And he simply can’t bid his addiction goodbye overnight.
Battling addiction takes a lot of time. Patience is the key to finally say goodbye to addiction. There is a series of steps and treatments that an addicted person must go through. Addiction rehabilitation centres offers various drug rehabilitation or alcohol rehabilitation programs that cater to the specific needs of the patients. These rehabilitation centres extend help to the patients. Without an intervention like what these rehabilitation centres give, it will be very hard for a person to stop addiction.
