Getting Ready For Sewage Removal And Extraction After The Flood

Statistics show that 90% of all natural disasters in the United States are due to floods. In fact, the government spends around $4 billion every year because of flood damage. Therefore, it is essential to know how to prevent flood damage before it even occurs. Flood damage prevention will ensure not just you and your family's safety, but the structural stability of your house as well.

Protecting your family and your home

Before learning some simple flood damage protection measures, you first need to know your area's flood risk. Knowing your flood risk can help you evaluate the safety measures that you are going to undertake. For example, if your area is not listed as a flood risk zone, then there is no need to undergo renovation to elevate your house. However, if your home is located in a flood zone area, you might want to use more drastic measures to prevent flood damage. To know your flood risk, contact your local Red Cross chapter, planning and zoning department, emergency management office, or the local National Weather Service office. Not only will you be able to assess your flood risk, these organizations may also give you tips and advices in preventing flood damage from wrecking your home.

Another way to protect your family against the hazards of sewage removal damage is to apply for flood insurance. Take note that homeowners' insurance does not cover damages due to floods. Do not wait for the damage to occur before you apply for flood insurance, because there is a 30-day waiting period before you finally get your flood insurance. Apply for a flood insurance policy as soon as you can.

Once you have your flood insurance, keep multiple copies of these papers and other pertinent document in safe places. Preferably, keep these things in a place that cannot be damaged by flood, such as a safe box or a waterproof box. These documents are very important in the event of flood damage, so you would not want to lose them.

In the event of sewage floods in your area, listen to the local news for any developments or announcements. Do not hesitate to evacuate your house once you are told to evacuate. It is advisable to have an evacuation plan and emergency kit in hand, so that your evacuation is done safely. Once you evacuate, do not drive through already flooded areas. Chances are you might get stuck in there, or worse, get swept away by the raging flood.

Making your home safer

These measures are important especially if you live in a flood risk zone. If there is an imminent danger of flood, it is advisable to move all your valuables in higher floors. Remove valuables from the basement, since this is the most flood-prone area of the house. Make sure that all vents and openings are above the projected flood level, so that water cannot easily get into your house.

There are also safety measures that you can do with the help of sewage extraction professionals. This includes raising your appliances to at least 12 inches above the projected flood levels, and installing backflow valves to prevent sewage backup, sewage extraction and sewage removal.

By keeping all these preventive measures in mind, avoiding flood damage may not be that hard after all. Do not hesitate to spend a little extra cash for these; after all, you might end up spending more when you are faced with a flooded household.
