Common Questions About RC Planes

You might have seen people flying RC planes and thought of joining the fun. But there is a whirlwind of questions in your mind and you seem confused without answers. You are not alone. There are millions others in the same dilemma and I have taken some of the commonly asked questions and provided the best answers for you.

1. What do I need to get started?

There are many things you need to get started. First you will need a model plane, of course. But though there are many models available, if you are a beginner, you should go for a trainer which is easy to control. There are many brands of trainers available. A search through various websites will be helpful. Some of the popular trainers you can get include super 40, Avistar 40 and 40Ex among others. If you plan to go for unassembled plane, then make sure you get all the parts, including the accessories.

2. How much do RC model planes cost?

This is one of the most commonly asked questions. Some people even shy off from pursuing their dream of flying RC planes due to the cost, but you don't have to bar your passion thinking of cost. RC planes are not that expensive especially if you are a novice. You can get a good trainer for less than $150. This cost in fact includes the engine and the radio. But this is a basic trainer.

If you want to advance, you need to put more money and get something with more controls. So, with around $400, you can get yourself a very respectable trainer. This one will give you more fun and enhance your advancement to more sophisticated RC planes.

And as you advance, the model planes will become more expensive as well. But it is advisable not to go for the cheapest model since you will not learn fast and the fun will be stolen away. Generally, an investment of around $300 to $500 will be a good amount to start with.

3. Is learning how to fly RC planes difficult?

Learning can be difficult just like learning how to ride a bicycle can. Once you are on the controls, you may panic and make mistakes. But you should not give up. We all learn through mistakes and that's why it is advisable to buy a trainer which is easily repairable and whose parts can easily be found.

4. What's the range of the radio controller?

One mile is the normal range of a modern RC plane. But don't let your excitement make you fly far, so that you can easily observe your plane and control it well. It should be known that even a big model will appear as a tiny object at half a mile.

5. Where can I find help?

You can find help from your local RC model plane shop since the dealers there are well versed with these models. You can also ask those who have been in this hobby for long and there are many web sites where information on RC planes is available.
