Why Should You Detail Your Model Tanks?

Assembling model tanks can be both fun and informative. There can be a good deal more to it that just buying it and throwing it together. Most models come in one flat color. You might decide you would like to paint yours to look much more like the original that the model was designed from. Maybe the decals that came with your tank are not realistic or do not properly match the signs that would have been found on the original.

If any of this sounds like thoughts you have had before then you should consider the many other options you have available. There is a good bit of detailing that can be done to a model to make it better suit your tastes. There is almost no limit to the amount of customization that can take place. With a little time and the right parts and tools you could be quite surprised what you can do.

If you would like to change the decals that came with your model then you could print new ones yourself. Find transparency paper at your local office supply store and you can use your computer to print your own. You could also order decals from a print shop but this can be a much more expensive. Look up pictures of the original tanks and you can get an idea of what the proper decals should look like. You can then match your font and scale it down. Make sure you print a test run out so that you can be sure that the final decals will turn out right when printed on the transparency paper.

You can make major changes in the overall look of your model tank just by changing the paint scheme. Older tanks and those in terrains where color did not matter were usually painted one flat color. Other times some tanks have had various camouflage patterns painted on them. Once again, by looking up pictures of the originals you can get a good idea as to what the overall paint job should look like. When you get ready to paint your tank make sure that you have properly cleaned and primed the surface to be painted. This will help to insure that the paint properly adheres.

Detailing your model tank is not difficult as long as you take the time to think out the changes you wish to make before hand. This will allow you to adjust accordingly if you find that a particular change will not work for the model that you were building at the time. Once it is completed you will have a model that reflects your particular tastes and creative streak as well.
