A Few Flat Roof Ideas For You to Consider

Most people when they think of roofing think of leaks and expensive repairs. Although repairing a roof can end up being very costly, you should also remember that ignoring any problems that occur now will only store up trouble for you later. There are so many different types of roofs but one of the most problematic can be the flat roof.

The reason people tend to have more problems with flat roofs than any other type is because they don't allow water to drain off. When the rain has nowhere to go it will sit there and eventually start to seep into any tiny gap it can find. If you experience a lot of snow then the snow will collect on top of your roof causing undue weight. This is why properties in areas with high snow fall have very steeply pitched roofs.

If you discover that your roof has a leak then you should do everything in your power to have this problem resolved. What is only a minor inconvenience today can end up being such a problem that you have to have your whole roof replaced. A water-tight flat roof is essential if you don't want to deal with bigger problems down the road. Luckily there are better quality materials available today that lessen the chances of leaking roofs but it still helps if you understand what your options are. There are a number of different flat roof materials but here are some of the most typical.

Built up roofs are basically just several layers of tar and water-resistant materials that are then toped with a layer of gravel. The reason you place gravel on the top is so that there is a barrier to fire. This is probably the cheapest option you'll find when looking for flat roof options but there is a problem of it being very heavy. You need to make sure that the joists can withstand the extra weight otherwise they'll need to be strengthened.

If you are keen to try installing your flat roof materials yourself then have a look at modified bitumen. It used to be that you required a torch to burn the materials in place but now they've got adhesive on it which makes it a load easier.

Rubber membranes are another option for you and it's very durable which is something you really want from a roofing material. If you do find a leak in your rubber membrane, you will find that locating the problem is easy. This is not the cheapest of options but you may find that the benefits are worth it.

This is really just an intro so some of the most common types of flat roof materials and it's by no means a comprehensive guide. There are other materials that you could choose instead such as copper or lead so do as much reading as you can before you commit yourself to one particular type of flat roof.
