Orginizing The Space In Your Basement
There is usually only one bad problem if you decide to use a basement for extra living area and that is if it gets a lot of moisture. Dampness and flooding may make a basement more of a problem than a plus when moisture situations need to be fixed. There are some remedies to be had when you are placing articles in an unpredictable basement until you can make proper repairs to correct the problem.
When you put articles in your basement, it is not good to leave them on the floor. When you have a basement floor that gets wet or damp when it rains, all the things on the floor will get wet. Card board boxes are really useless as storage places when wet and anything in them will end up soaked. Using plastic bins for storing things is a much smarter idea. It not only keeps articles from water, but when you use plastic covers too, they help keep out moisture and crawling insects or rodents as well.
Install shelving in the basement if it is prone to flooding. Shelving will keep belongings like the plastic boxes or any other things from getting wet. Even if your basement is continually dry, using shelves is always a smart idea in case a water line breaks because flooding might happen from this as well. Attaching hooks on the basement walls and hanging bars are good items to use to keep things off the floor as well.
When a basement keeps a lot of moisture, try painting the cinder block walls using a paint material especially for cement. You can get paint materials with a sealant in them that are supposed to help with damp walls. It is never a wise idea to store essential papers or keepsakes like photo albums in a moist basement. It may create mildew and mold and these belongings could be permanently damaged.
It is vital that any plumbing in your basement stays in good condition and does not leak. This should help to stop any unexpected water dilemmas from pipes. If your basement floods or gets moist from water getting in from outside, you should seek a water damage expert to identify the dilemma and tell you the wisest way to repair it.
