Water Problems And Basement Storage
There is usually only one common difficulty when you resolve to use a basement for more living area and that is if it produces a lot of dampness. Dampness and flooding will sometimes convert a basement into more of a headache than a convenient addition when water conditions have to be dealt with. There are some solutions to use, at least temporarily, if you are hiding articles in a less than perfect basement until you can find the real problem.
If you put things in your basement, it is not good to leave them on the floor. When you have a basement floor that gets wet if it rains very much, all the things on the floor will probably get wet. Card board boxes will not be very effective as storage options when wet and whatever is in them gets wet too. Getting plastic boxes for storing things is a much safer idea. It can keep items from water, but if you use plastic covers, it helps to keep out insects, dust, and moisture as well.
Install shelves in the basement if it gets flooded very often. Shelving will protect belongings like the plastic boxes or anything else from getting wet with water. Even if your basement is usually dry, putting items on shelves is always a better idea because of water pipe breaks. Using hooks on the basement walls and hanging bars are useful ways to put up things and keep them off the floor too.
When the basement keeps a great deal of moisture, you could paint the cinder block walls using a paint product specifically for basement walls. You can get paint products with a sealant in them that should help stop this kind of moisture. It is never a wise idea to store essential papers or family keepsakes like photos in a damp basement. It might create mold and mildew and these belongings could be permanently damaged.
Be sure that whatever water sources there are in your basement remain in good shape and this will help to side track any unexpected flooding caused by them. When a basement is wet or damp as a result of water seeping in from outside, you you should get a professional to take a look at the problem and determine the most effective resolution.
