Waterbeds Are Not Bullet Proof

Many might believe that water beds were thought up in the 1960s, and even though they were loved by the younger generation of that time period, the invention date is not really correct. The water bed is first talked about in 1871. They were first used for people with infirmities. They were even spoken of in a written piece by Mark Twain. Later in 1883, a Doctor named William Hooper attempted to market the water bed, but his attempt failed because he did not create a way to warm the bed or restrain the water. He had first wanted it to help dissuade bed sores on bedridden people.

The first sales of the modern water bed did happen in 1968 by a guy called Charles Hall. He attended the San Francisco State University where he was a design pupil. Hall could not get a patent because in preceding years a water bed similar to his was talked about in fiction stories by the writer Robert a. Heinlein, even though Heinlein never actually made his idea of a water bed.

What could be the association with water damage you ask? If you have or had one and if it sprang a leak you probably know why already. With the older versions, even a tiny pin hole may drip for days before you paid attention to it. Depending on where the puncture is found, it may eventually seep onto the floor. Today everybody is sure to have a liner under the mattress, but even a liner is not fool proof since they are normally made of vinyl material as well. When an object with a sharp point or edge gets dropped between the frame and mattress or liner and mattress, little punctures or even tears can occur.

If this happens when you are dressing for work, after you come back home, it could have made a big mess in the liner. If you are gone several days, it will possibly saturate a large part of your bed room floor. In one instance I know of, because it happened in my home, my water bed had a puncture, I did not realize it of course, when I went on vacation. I shut off the air conditioning and my home was pretty hot. After I came back the water bed had saturated one quarter of the bedrooms hard wood floor. It had dried because of the heat and it had bulked up a 1/4 foot high. It will occur.

Gratefully, the new styles water bed mattresses are usually in sections and are made of hardier materials, but if you still use one of the dinosaur water beds, be advised of their danger of water damage.
