We Lived in the Kitchen Until it Flooded
Kitchens are sometimes one of the rooms in a residence that can be the most susceptible to water damage. Besides the plumbing installed for the sinks in the kitchen, there is probably a water line running to the fancy refrigerator models that have ice makers and water dispensers, the dishwasher, and many times a washing machine or hot water heater will be placed nearby. A major flood in a kitchen will possibly put it out of commission for days or even weeks.
If an inbound water line or pipe in a kitchen comes loose or bursts, it can be terrible, especially if you are not in residence when it happens. If you have been away for a few hours or even worse for a few days, the entire home can be flooded. If you see that your kitchen or any area of your house has been saturated with any large amount of water, the first thing to do is shut off the electricity using the main breaker. Then you should get the water off as fast as you can. It could be that getting it off with an inside valve is possible. There is a long wrench you can use to turn it off at the main line outside.
If you do not have the tool to turn the water off, phone your water company's emergency phone number. After the water is off, disconnect the electrical appliances that are close to the water. The stove, refrigerator, trash compactor, dishwasher, anything electrical, even if it has not have gotten wet. If the amount of water is not a great quantity, you might use a wet/dry vacuum to suck up the water, but this can take a while and time is of the essence when water is saturating your dwelling place. The quicker it is cleaned up, the less chance there may be for mold hazards.
If the water is a vast amount, make a call to a water damage specialist. They can get the job done more adequately and the fee can be taken care of by your home owner's insurance plan when the water problem resulted from damaged plumbing in the home and not from Mother Nature. Do not use your electrical items that that might be water damaged until you have them looked at by a qualified professional.
