How Often Should You Update Your Website?

We're always being told that keeping our websites fresh is the key to making sure customers and readers keep coming back for more.

But how often should we be making updates? Is once a day too much? Maybe once a week isn't often enough? How can you tell?

The first clue is this - you need to make sure your website is always truthful. By this I don't mean that you would ever tell lies; rather I mean that the information contained on its many pages is always correct. If you suddenly find you've got tons of broken links, your articles are weeks if not months out of date, and half the products you're selling are out of date as well, then you know that an overhaul is long overdue.

The next clue comes in the form of emails from subscribers. You'll always get one or two from people who will query information or links of some kind, but if the numbers suddenly start going up you can take that as an indication you've got some work to do.

It's also important to remember that Google loves active websites. When those search engine spiders go out for a crawl around the web, they tend to notice the sites that have plenty of active links, lots of relevant and up to date content, and plenty of activity.

By updating your site regularly you will continue to attract the attention of the spiders, and your site will benefit as a result. If you stop updating your site for a while, you'll notice your search engine ranking will start to fall. It might be a constant battle to keep your website up to date, but if you don't you'll pay in more ways than one.

In essence then, you should probably be updating your site every day. By keeping on top of this job you'll be better able to spot tiny errors and cracks as they appear, and you'll be able to patch them up quickly without it causing you any major problems at all.

The problem is that lots of people assume a site update will take hours. It doesn't. Not if you do it daily. You might just tweak it here and there, or you may just give it the once over and find there is nothing to do.

The point is, if you are serious about having a successful website that makes sales, makes money and draws in the traffic, you shouldn't mind taking a look at it every day to see where you can improve on things. If it starts to feel like a chore you're either in the wrong business, or you're doing something wrong.

There is no website online that is perfect in every way. But all that daily tweaking can improve your results, improve your ranking and improve your traffic, as you slowly find ways of advancing your knowledge and using it in a positive way.

Suddenly that dreary task of updating your site doesn't seem so bad, does it?
