Is Free File Hosting A Viable Option To Store Files On The Internet?
How often do you need to access your stored data?
It depends upon how often you need to upload files and how many files you have to upload. If you are going to upload important data only, it might be a good use of technology. If you don't have to do it on a continual basis meaning several times a day, it would be a good choice. If you have need for storing data on a regular basis, then you will probably want to research other options for your needs like a back up drive or a re-writable tape system.
Do you have a need to access data from different physical locations?
This is a great use of the technology if you need to store your data and then access it from a different location. It is all stored via the web, so you can access it from any computer that has Internet access.
Do you need to share data with other individuals?
Again, great solution. You can provide the other individual with a URL to access the data. Some Hosting sites allow you to password protect your data making it even a safer option.
How much data do you need to store?
The shear volume of data can make or break this option. Many sites have a limited storage space for free uploads and then you can upgrade your account for more storage space for a fee.
Having to upload large files to the Internet can be a slow process based on what kind of connection you have to the Internet and how fast it can upload information. Another consideration is that you can upload a larger file that many email systems cannot handle, making this a very viable solution for transferring data to another individual on a rather immediate basis. Comparing it to transferring your information to media and then having to deliver the media or hiring a carrier service to deliver it for you.
The only downside to using this free service is how they make their money. Advertising does it. You cannot control the kind of advertising anyone sees. If you are working with a client, there may be advertising you would not want to associate with. Another downside is that large corporations can often block the kind of advertising that's supported. This is not a detriment per say, but something to consider when weighing your options.
