Gift Giving At The Office
Make sure you check the company policy on gifts. There are often guidelines on what is acceptable and what is not. If you are not clear on the policy, or new to the office, ask your co-workers about what they have given in the past.
If you don't like someone, do not exclude them from the gift exchange. You probably work in a small office and everyone will know you chose not to buy a gift for that person. While this may seem like a fitting slight to someone who wronged you in the past, it can alienate you from the rest of the people in the office.
Instead of doing a gift exchange, do a Secret Santa gift exchange. This will ensure that no one knows who they got the gifts from and if there is a problem with the gift you gave, no one will know it was yours.
Always be careful what you buy for your supervisor or boss. Often, this practice can put pressure on employees as they each try and get that special something for the boss, without looking like they are bribing him or her or kissing up. Try and go with something small and simple, like a thank you letter or a coffee cup. Pay attention to what your boss has in his or her office and buy something that would fit in nicely.
It may seem funny to get that blow up doll for a co-worker but it is wildly inappropriate for the office. Never, ever buy a gift from a specialty store that could be seen as vulgar in any way. It may seem harmless but it could result in a sexual harassment lawsuit against the company. Instead, go with something simple like a picture frame or pen set.
If you can't think of what to buy your boss or co-worker, then either give them a gift certificate for a store that carries many different items, or donate a certain amount of money to a worthy charity in their name. A meaningful gift will win you many friends around the office.
If you are the boss, don't try and be funny and give a useless gift to an employee. Depending on the employee, they may see that as an indication of their useless work and they may take it seriously. Like you would give to a boss, give them a small token to say thank you for all their hard work. One thing to think about, a bonus is the best way to get a smile on an employee's face this Christmas season.
