How Wimbledon And Hospitality Are Synonymous
The tournament has a universal appeal that is rooted in the image of the tournament as part of British heritage. The tournament is the only in the world that still employs a strict dress code. Players that play in the tournament must wear white clothing and this adds to the prestige of the tournament. It is the foremost tournament to be held in the UK but that being said it has not been won by a British player since Virginia Wade won the competition in 1977.
The last British man to win the tournament did so in 1936. That man was Fred Perry. Since then and especially in recent years the British public have rooted for a British contender to mount a serious challenge on the title and each year the country is gripped by tennis mania as the country wills the latest hopeful to victory. The more recent hopefuls have included Tim Henman, Greg Rusedski and the most recent British contender of them all Andrew Murray. The Wimbledon facility is famed for having a large hill within it where people congregate to watch video footage of the games that they are not permitted entry to. In recent years the hill has adopted various nicknames which relate to the latest British hopeful. It has been called 'Henman Hill', 'Rusedski Ridge' and of late 'Murray mound'. The area attracts vociferous fans that are free to cheer on their favourite players without fear of upsetting the serious atmosphere that is sometimes present inside the stadiums.
Despite the lack of recent success Britain does have the all time joint number of titles holder in William Renshaw. He, along with American Andre Agassi, has won a magnificent total of 7 Wimbledon titles. Other notable title holders are tennis players such as Roger Federer and Bjorn Borg who have both won and incredible 5 consecutive titles. Federer will be the top of this list if he wins his sixth tournament in a row which is possible if he were to take the title this year. The player which has won the most amount of titles is Martina Navratilova who won an incredible 7 doubles titles and a further astonishing 9 singles titles. Austrailian doubles specialist Todd Woodbridge has won an impressive 9 doubles titles.
The British public have a real passion for the tournament and this year there is likely to be as much excitement as ever. Tennis has a hard time in the UK. The weather is not conducive to play all year round and there are very few facilities in the UK at which tennis can be played. It is somewhat a fair weather sport. Nevertheless there is a great amount of interest in the sport as a spectator sport. It is a very popular option for corporate hospitality and armchair viewing. Such is the quality of venues and food that is apparent at these events the Wimbledon championships are a very popular option for businesses that want to thank employees for a year of hard work or to mingle with prospective clients.
