The History Of Legendary Honda ATVs
Initially, the engineers considered various configurations, from two wheels, to four wheels, and even six wheels with a variety of other components. However, the group decided on a three-wheel Honda ATV because it was built with the most compatible features to provide the vehicle's intended function.
The first Honda ATV model that saw the light was the US90. With a seven horsepower engine, a four-speed gearbox, and an automatic clutch, people could snap up this new kind of vehicle for around six hundred dollars. This 1970 model was mainly used by farmers because of its fat tire and capability of riding through sand and snow. It didn't take long before people were starting to use this ATV for pure recreation.
The ATV market started to boom at the beginning of the 1980s. More and more farmers were also using the models designed for work purposes. The 1980s were dominated by the Honda ATC185, a powerful ATV with an automatic clutch, five speed gearbox, and a 180cc engine.
When all-terrain vehicles began to be used in sports, Honda released the 1982 ATC200E (also known as the "Big Red"). It was a powerful vehicle with a 192cc engine and a 4-speed, dual range gearbox that produced more power, compared to its utility model counterpart. In 1984 Honda improved on the ATC200E by adding a reverse gear and they also put in a new drive chain that improved durability.
From 1980s onwards, Honda ATVs are used for racing everywhere from desert roads to frozen lakes all over America. Honda as a company is well known for its performance cars and motorcycles, and their ATVs do not disappoint.
During later years, Honda switched their ATV design from three wheels to four wheels for the even greater stability. Continually improving their machines, they opted for the four wheeled version that could provide better suspension and handle more powerful engines.
The name Honda is synonymous with innovation and vision in the all terrain vehicle market. Famous models from Honda include the four-wheel TRX200, the 1988 FourTrax 300, the 1995 Foreman 400 and a dozen more of high-performance vehicles.
