Explore Kakadu National Park In Your Australia Vacation

Set in the northern part of Australia, Kakadu National Park is wonderful setting for your Australia Vacation. Do not just spend one day, take a week if time permits to absorb the landscape and witness the wildlife. Aboriginal people have made it their home for over 60,000 years and due to lack of industrialization, the landscape appears seemingly untouched. Even local folks that have lived there for years grossly underestimate how vast Kakadu really is and have yet to explore all the wonders of the park.

Kakadu, a World Heritage site, is one of only three sites in the world also to be listed asa UNESCO site attributed to it is unique archaeological and ethnological reserve. When visiting you will encounter cave paintings, rock carvings and many archaeological findings that demonstrate the regions inhabitants way of life back as far as 40,000 years ago. What is more impressive is that the original hunter gathers of that time are still there. Besides the human life, Kakadu is a living example of a very complex ecosystem that incorporates tidal flats, lowland and plateau areas and flood plains that provide for a vast amount of rare species of flora and fauna.

Near the Mary River, Gunlom Falls is located in the southern part of Kakadu. As it is not a very popular tourist attraction, yet, it is relatively easy to get to by regular two wheel drive vehicle, and features a secluded swimming pool that is located directly below a breathtaking waterfall. Feel free to explore around the waterfall and even take a hike up to the top for a birds eye view.

Maguk in Kakadu National Park, previously known as Barramundi Gorge, is one of the spectactular water falls in the park, particularly, it is one of the few that does not dry up when the rainy season ends, merely narrows down. Many folks stand directly under the waterfall for a relaxing shower as well as trek to the top of the waterfall. Be prepared for a 1.5 mile walk from your car to the bush camping area.

While in the Maguk area, you can experience a monsoonal forest with lush vegetation. And after walking in scorching heat, the cool shade provides a great alibi to explore the very unique birds and lizards. You may even want to check the crocodile trap as many saltwater crocodiles in the area will move upstream and end up getting trapped and need to be relocated by Park staff.
