The Europeans remained very fascinated during all of this with the stories about Tahiti and its tropical beauty. They also maintained a wild interest in the exotic animals and plant life that inhabited the island. The disputes came to an end though when in 1957, all of the Tahitian islands were designated as French territory. This is when they were renamed French Polynesia.
