What Everybody Ought to Know about tents

As the summer approaches, more and more people are thinking about where to go on holiday. One of the great British pastimes is going camping as it relatively inexpensive. But does the general public actually know which tent is best for them. In this article we are going to talk a bit about these different types and hopefully you can make up your mind which one is ideal for you.
When out in the elements you need to be prepared by having the correct equipment, if you are camping abroad you need to take into account changing weather and make sure your tent will be up for the job.
Camping tents come in all different shapes, sizes and styles from your smaller lightweight one man tent to giant family size tents. Each one has its own advantages so hopefully we will clear some of this up for you.

Frame Tents
These are your typical old style tent that use metal poles to create a frame, and then a tent cloth is draped over. The material used, traditionally was canvas but is now more often than not using synthetic fabric with fibreglass frames. The benefits of this type are that they can offer a lot of room, but on the downside can but fiddly to put up.

Dome Tents
This popular style of tent is a dome shaped structure that uses a flexible fibreglass or plastic poles that slip through a fabric tent cover. These tents are very easy to set up and can usually collapse for storage. The downside is that they are very susceptible to high winds.

Family Tents
This style of tent is a ridge construction or dome construction large sized tent that are aimed at families or large groups. They usually offer individual compartments that act as mini bedrooms and create a living area in the middle.

Ridge Tents
These triangle shaped tents have horizontal poles running across the top of the tent and two vertical poles for support. These traditionally have wooden poles and canvas tent covers. This style of tent gives alot of headroom as they are tall.

Pyramid Tent
These very simple tents are just a waterproof tarp that is draped over a pole. They are extremely easy to set up but are very poor in any kind of conditions other than dry weather.

Expedition / Touring Tents
These tents are usually a combination of ridge and dome tents and are a large style also suited for families. These tents are great for longer stays as they have large porch style areas for sitting under with canopies acting as shade. These roomy comfortable tents are large enough to stand and walk around in and will often have plastic windows on the walls. These tents are popular are popular for family holidays and weekend breaks.
